NFSC 360: Nutrition Throughout the Lifecycle
Skill Area: Community Nutrition
Assignment Title: Observation Report
What I learned: In this assignment I learned about social interaction and eating habits of children in preschool. I also learned how to estimate amount of food eaten and put it into a nutrient analysis program. When I did this project it was in the beginning of my nutrition classes so I was just beginning to grasp the main ideas of nutrition.
Reflection to assignment: This assignment gave me the opportunity to get some real life experience viewing social interaction at lunch time for preschool and elementary school students. One thing that I think would improve intake would be to have the children do recess first and by the time they ate they would be very hungry. Instead the children are so excited about recess that food is the last thing on their mind and they want to skip it all together.
Relevance to the profession: Child nutrition is very important for proper growth. At social events children are easily distracted by their peers overall decreasing their intake. It is also very important to have a good understanding of what is served at schools to make sure that kids have the opportunity to get the nutrients they need.
